What to Expect When Serving a Weekend Sentence in the Whitley County Jail

Zach Baber • November 25, 2025

For many people in Columbia City and Whitley County, the idea of serving a weekend sentence can feel overwhelming.

Whether it’s part of an OWI conviction, a probation violation, or a misdemeanor case, reporting to jail - even for 24 to 48 hours - brings real anxiety.

At Baber & Baber, P.C., we’ve guided clients through this process for decades.

If you’ve been ordered to serve time in the Whitley County Jail (or another nearby jail such as Noble County, Allen County, or Kosciusko County), here is a practical, realistic guide to what you can expect.

This article is meant to reduce fear, eliminate surprises, and help you prepare.

1. You’ll Receive a Reporting Date and Time

Most weekend sentences require you to self-report on a Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Your court order will tell you exactly where and when to arrive.

In Whitley County, you will report to the Whitley County Jail located in Columbia City.

Arriving late, even by a few minutes, can create major problems, including additional charges.

Tip:
Plan to arrive 15–20 minutes early. Parking is simple, but nerves make everything take longer.

2. Expect Intake Procedures (Search, Inventory, Medical Questions)

Upon arrival, you’ll go through standard jail intake.

This includes:
  • Turning over personal items
  • Being searched
  • Answering medical screening questions
  • Removing jewelry, belts, shoelaces
  • Listing any medications you take
Whitley County officers remain professional and direct.

The process is not meant to intimidate you, it’s simply routine.

Anything brought in will be held until you’re released.

3. You Will Receive Jail Clothing and a Mat

All county jails in our region, including Whitley, Noble, Allen, and Kosciusko, issue standard clothing.

You may receive:
  • Jail uniform
  • Rubber sandals
  • Thin mat
  • Blanket
These items are not designed for comfort, but weekend sentences typically last 24–48 hours, and most people manage the stay without major trouble.

4. Housing: What Your Cell Will Be Like

Weekend inmates in Whitley County typically stay in general population unless otherwise ordered. Expect:
  • A shared dorm or cell
  • Bunk beds or mats on the floor
  • Minimal privacy
  • Lights out at scheduled times
  • Loudness during certain hours
If you are worried about your safety, please talk to your attorney ahead of time.

5. Meals and Schedule

County jail meals are simple:
  • Breakfast really early
  • Lunch late morning
  • Dinner in the afternoon
Meals vary but commonly include oatmeal, peanut butter sandwiches, casseroles, boxed drinks, and fruit.

Weekends also come with downtime.

You may have long stretches without activity.

Prepare yourself mentally. Bring patience.

6. No Phones, No Internet, No Outside Contact (Except Mail)

Weekend inmates generally cannot:
  • Use phones freely
  • Access the internet
  • Receive visitors
  • Bring electronics
For many, this is the hardest part - the silence, the time to think, and the lack of distraction.

You can typically make collect calls or paid kiosk/tablet calls, but availability varies.

7. Medications Must Be Pre-Approved

If you take prescription medication:
  • Inform the jail before your report date (your attorney can help)
  • Bring medications in original pharmacy packaging
  • Expect verification before doses are given
Never skip this step.

Medication issues cause more problems than anything else during weekend sentences.

8. Good Behavior Means a Smooth Release

If you follow instructions, avoid confrontation, and respect staff, your stay will be uneventful.

Most weekend sentences in Whitley County and surrounding counties release inmates:
  • Early Sunday morning
  • Or at your designated release time
The release process includes returning property and signing paperwork.

This may take 20–90 minutes depending on staffing.

9. Prepare Emotionally — It’s Often the Hardest Part

The biggest challenge people report is fear of the unknown.

But here’s the truth:
  • Most weekend sentences are calm, structured, and manageable.
You’re not going to prison.

You’re finishing a requirement, paying your debt to the court, and moving forward.

Remember:
Thousands of people serve weekend time every year in Whitley County and the surrounding areas.

You will get through it too.

10. After You’re Released, Focus on Moving Forward

Serving a weekend sentence does not define you.

Once completed, you have the chance to:
  • Resume work
  • Continue probation smoothly if applicable
  • Keep driving privileges intact
  • Rebuild your future
If you have additional court requirements — classes, probation check-ins, community service — complete them on time.

Staying proactive prevents future consequences.
